At the Child Care Commission¹s annual scholarship/ lottery dinner on May 15, 2003, Judy Weinstock, Program Director for the Newton Community Service Centers Family Day Care System, was awarded the Tom Torchia Child Care Advocate Of The Year Award. Given annually, this award honors a person who has consistently demonstrated interest, involvement and commitment to the optimal growth and development of children in the community.

Judy joined the Newton Community Service Center in 1981 and over the course of 22 years has continually enhanced the quality of family based child care through the development of a model Family Day Care System. Her model program has allowed many women, including several single mothers on welfare, to develop child care skills and earn income in their own homes with weekly professional support and guidance.

Judy received a Masters in Education from Wheelock College and more recently she completed 2 years of training through the Boston Institute for Psychotherapy to qualify as an Infant Mental Health Specialist. Judy also offers workshops for teachers and parents and is a consultant to the Early Start Head Start Program in Rhode Island.

Judy and her husband who live in Newton, have three grown sons. In addition, since 1994, they have been supporting and sharing guardianship of another child, a senior in high school, who will be attending college next year.

We are pleased to honor Judy with this award and look forward to her continuing work with Newton families and chicldren.

At our 5th annual ³Kidz in Jeopardy² Game Show fundraiser held on April 2, 2003, the Providence College Alumni team came out on top! Each member of the team received a $100 gift certificate donated by the Legal Sea Foods Restaurant. The runner up team from the Angier After School Parent Board received $50 gift certificates donated by the Fire and Ice Restaurant.

Once again, we would like to thank Ken Brennan and the Auburndale Cooperative Bank for generously sponsoring the event. We would also like to thank our many ³Friends² who also contributed: Activity Academy; Auburndale Community Nursery School; Patricia Davidson; Little Red Wagon Play School; Meeting House Child Care Center; Plowshares Child Care Center and Barbara Sullivan.

The M.C. for the evening, Charlie Pierce of NPR radio, kept the evening lively. The audience was treated to complimentary food from local bakeries as well as raffle prizes donated from many local businesses.

It was an enjoyable and successful evening and we raised over $7,000 for our scholarship fund!
