Child Care Update: January 2004

Single Parent Support Groups

Thanks to a continuation grant from the Rebecca Pomroy Foundation we are able to offer a series of workshops for single parents again this year. Two upcoming workshops are:

Thursday, January 29, 2004 - A social evening (pizza dinner provided)

Tuesday, March 2, 2004 - A evening with Tod Gross, Psy.D. Question & Answer

Each evening offers time for socializing, conversation and topic discussion. Child care is offered free of charge through the Plowshares Child Care Center. Workshops are located at Newton North High School in the Plowshares Child Care Center and run from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. If you are interested in learning more about these workshops or would like to register to attend, please call Ann at 617-332-6723.

Kidz in Jeopardy Fundraiser

Kidz in Jeopardy!

On Thursday, April 15th, we will, for the sixth time, be sponsoring our annual "Kidz in Jeopardy" fundraiser. There will be a new twist to the event this year-it will be produced and filmed at the New TV studio in Newton Highlands. With the return of Andy Vizulis, former commissioner and inventor of the bells, whistles and scoreboard, Chris Murphy, teacher at Newton North High School, designer of the software program, combined with the technology of a television studio, it's sure to be an exciting event!

The game is played much like the television show with an Alex Trebek-like M.C., a large screen for the questions, and podiums & buzzers for the contestants. Each podium will have a team of three players (not just one) any one of who can buzz in with the answer. Some of the previous teams were; Board of Alderman, Newton Needham Chamber of Commerce, Newton Firefighters Association, Village Bank, Newton After School Association, Mayor Cohen's Team, PTO's and more. Each team pays a fee to play, with prizes for the 1st place team and runnerup. There will be a raffle with wonderful prizes and the winners will be announced during the event. All proceeds from this event will go towards our scholarship fund which provides tuition assistance with child care costs to low/ moderate income working families in Newton. This past fiscal year we were able to allocate $50,000 to families with monies raised through grants, direct mail donations and this fundraising event.

If you are interested in learning more about this event, or would like to have a team participate, please call Ann at 617-332-6723.
