Child Care Update: January 2005

Single Parent Support Groups Are Up & Running

Thanks to a continuation grant from the Rebecca Pomroy Foundation, we are able to offer six single parent workshops this year.

The next four are listed below:

Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005 - "A Time To Share" - An idea generated by the group itself to share something with the group that gives you piece of mind, a stress reliever or just makes you feel good! (books, music, poetry....)

Thursday, March 10, 2005 - "Resource Guide Update" - We will provide for the group an updated listing of financial support and resources in and around Newton. We will include any new ideas from the group.

Wednesday, April 13, 2005 - "An Evening With Tod Gross, Psy.D." - Back by popular demand - a question and answer evening with our favorite psychologist.

Thursday, May 26, 2005 - "A Social Evening" - Time for socializing and connecting! Dinner provided. Each evening offers time for socializing, conversation and topic discussion. Child care is offered free of charge by child care providers through the Newton Community Service Center. Workshops are located at Newton Community Service Center, 492 Waltham St., W. Newton from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. Pizza is provided for the children - light refreshments for the adults. For further information or to register for any of the workshops please call Ann @ 617- 332-6723.

Do you Need Help Paying For Child Care or Summer Camp?

The Newton Child Care Commission will be sponsoring its scholarship lottery program beginning on April 1, 2005. Parents who apply for this assistance must be working or going to school, be income eligible and be residents of Newton.

Completed applications must be back into our office no later than April 29th, 2005. Scholarships are allocated, via a lottery, in $1,000 increments. Parents may use this money to help pay for any licensed infant/toddler, preschool, after school, family child care or summer program. If you would like to receive information about this program please call Ann @ 617-332-6723 so you can be put on our data base.

* Historical note - In it's 15 year history the Child Care Commission has allocated $630,000 through the scholarship lottery program.

Kidz in Jeopardy Fundraiser

Kidz in Jeopardy!

YES! "Kidz in Jeopardy" Is Coming Again!

On Thursday, April 7, 2005, our 7th annual fundraising event, "Kidz in Jeopardy" is coming to town. This years event will again be produced and filmed at the NewTV studio in Newton Highlands. With Andy Vizulis, former commissioner and inventor of the scoreboard, bells & buzzers; Chris Murphy, teacher at Newton North High School, designer of the Jeopardy software program and Katie Donovan, great thinker and writer of all the questions & answers once again on board, it is sure to be an exciting evening!

We will once again have 12 teams competing. Currently we have three teams registered; Bigelow PTO, Mayor Cohen's office and Ward After School Program. Each team will pay-toplay with prizes awarded to the first place and runner up teams. Brooke Lipsitt, our Mistress of Ceremonies from last year has graciously agreed to come back for a repeat performance. Refreshments will be served to the contestants and raffle tickets will be available to purchase for a chance to win some awesome prizes.

All proceeds from this event will go towards our scholarship fund which provides tuition assistance with child care costs to low/moderate income working families in Newton. If you are interested in learning more about this event, participating as a member of a team, purchasing raffle tickets or making a contribution, please call Ann @ 617-332-6723.

* Did you know that last November during the Seventh Annual Fall Video Festival, Ann Brown of the Child Care Commission and Tony Mastantuono of NewTV were awarded second place in recognition of outstanding video production in the category of Local Events & Attractions for "Kidz in Jeopardy"?

Newton Child Care Commission Receives Grant From Perpetual Benevolent Fund

The Child Care Commission greatly appreciates an $8,000 grant received from the Perpetual Benevolent Fund. This money, in full, will go directly to our scholarship fund. The secretary from the Fund wrote, "The Committee is pleased to be able to continue to support this program and hope the funds assist as many families as possible". We are so very grateful that grant funding helps support the work we do on behalf of the children and families of Newton.
