Child Care Update: Spring / Summer 2002

4th Annual Kidz in Jeopardy

This year on April 2nd, the 4th annual, "KIDZ IN JEOPARDY" game show fund raising event was held at Newton North High School. This years event was generously sponsored by Ken Brennan and the Auburndale Cooperative Bank. Eighteen teams participated trying their best to outwit each other with their trivia knowledge. Master of Ceremonies, Jim Marini, kept the evening lively with his natural wit. The audience was treated to complimentary food from local bakeries as well as raffle prizes from many local businesses. The winning team from the Newton Rotary Club, a first year entrant, beat out the other teams to receive the winning prize of three gift certificates donated by the Capital Grille of Chestnut Hill. The runner up team from the Angier After School Parent Board, received three gift certificates from the Chateau Restaurant in Waltham . A fun time was had by all and $6,000 was raised for the commission's scholarship fund.

If you like to play along with Jeopardy on T.V. and think you know your trivia, please consider joining us on a team next year. For further information or to be placed on our mailing list, please call us at 617-332-6723.

Thank You BC and Mayor Cohen

We are grateful to have once again been chosen to receive a contribution from Boston College through Mayor Cohen's office. This year we received $2,280. This money will go directly to our scholarship fund for the coming year. We are most appreciative of all contributions made to this fund.

Scholarship Lottery

At the annual scholarship/lottery dinner held on May 21, 2002, $36,000 was awarded in tuition assistance to eligible families from Newton. These 36 families will each be able to access $1,000 to be used towards their child care costs at any family child care, center based infant/toddler, preschool program or summer camp. Funds for this lottery were raised through grants, fund raising events and donations. Donations to this scholarship fund are always greatly appreciated.

In our 13 year history, Newton Child Care Commission has awarded over $500,000 to eligible Newton families for their child care costs!

Personal Testaments

"I want to thank you and to recognize the generosity of those who made it possible for me to receive the $1,000 scholarship. Without it, it would not have been possible for my son to attend camp and for me to return to work. ....my son could be cared for in a safe environment and literally I was able to come off of welfare.... I am eternally grateful." A Newton Mother

"Thank you so much to the commission and the contributors of this needed and appreciated fund. God Bless You!"

"Thank you for the scholarship. We will use it towards camp this summer and this will enable me to continue working without having to cut my hours." Gratefully yours
